Step-by-Step Google Chrome Installation on a New Computer
A new computer is the cleanest place to watch a Google Chrome install because leftover browsers are not already holding files open. The steps below assume a Windows PC because that is still the most common new-box story in our mail. macOS users can treat the first three steps as the same idea and then follow the package dialog. Phone users can skip to the store and ignore the stub entirely.
First, finish the operating system’s own first-run screens and connect to a network you trust. A brand-new PC that is still on a setup wizard will fight you for attention. Create the user account you plan to keep. Give the disk a few minutes to finish silent driver work if the vendor scheduled that. Then open this download page and use the Windows button. Wait until ChromeSetup.exe is complete in the downloads list. Partial files are a common reason an install exits in the first minute.
Second, run the file. If Windows SmartScreen shows a blue caution, read the publisher line. A file that started from the button on this page should look ordinary. Continue only if you recognize the path. The stub will open a small dialog, then spend time fetching. Leave the PC awake. Do not start a long game download in the same minute unless you like watching both crawl. When the dialog reports success, do not unplug the machine for a move across the room until you have launched the browser once.
Third, launch Google Chrome from the shortcut it created. The first window may offer to import from another browser. On a new PC there may be nothing to import except vendor bloat. Import later if you will copy bookmarks from an old machine with a file or a signed-in account. The sign-in card can wait. Set a homepage only if you want one. Many people are happier with a blank startup and a bookmarks bar they fill during the first week.
Fourth, confirm the install stuck. Open the about page and let it check for updates. Open a site you actually need, not a demo page. Pin the application to the taskbar if that is how you work. Create a second profile now if the PC will be shared, before anyone stores a password in the default profile. That is the whole ceremony. If a step fails, jump to the troubleshooting tone on the guide page rather than rerunning the stub ten times in a row.
People who image many PCs should write these four steps on the same sheet as their other first-day tasks. The browser is not special enough to deserve a separate ritual, and it is important enough that skipping the about-page check leaves a lab full of mixed versions. One written order keeps Friday’s machines aligned with Monday’s machines.
